18 May What do you do?
What do you do?
“WHAT DO YOU DO?” I used to hate that question because I hated being put into a black and white box. It just would seem like whatever the heck I would answer really didn’t describe “what I do.”
I never felt like I gave a complete answer and I would dread that question and the questions that my 1/2 answer would prompt.
If I say I am in “fitness” people ask if I compete (I don’t). If I say I am a nutritionist I get a detailed description of their daily food intake (yes I believe you don’t usually eat that way). If I say I am an author I hear all about their kid’s school paper that should have been an A (but wasn’t). Never mind that my book is a recipe book lol.
Sometimes I would mess with people and say things like “I am a pro basketball player” and would wait for their reaction sizing up my 5’2″ frame.
Basically no answer I would give described me, my passions or would get any type of interesting conversation going. This is probably why I hated “small talk”. Small talk and meeting strangers would always lead to this question: “What do you do?”
I figured it out.
I don’t hate it anymore because I have a clear answer that I’m proud of. What do I do? Well, “IT DEPENDS ON THE DAY.”
It depends on the day
You see, I’m a multi-passionate, yet easily distracted optimist. I’ve been told my whole life to “focus” on one thing and at 45 I just don’t feel like it anymore (actually never did feel like focusing in on just one thing) and if you tell me to, we won’t stay friends.
I’ve been labeled by therapists as “ADHD” and told to swallow pills to fix that. I’ve been labeled by the KOLBE as a high “QuickStart” and I’ve been told by employees to “stop with the ideas.” I’ve been told by self-proclaimed experts to “pick one thing to focus on” and by teachers as a kid to “stop day dreaming.”
Why do we have to stop dreaming and why do we have to comply with others expectations of us? We don’t always need to be “fixed.”
We can be a lot of things – we ARE a lot of things.
Some days I’m an Author, some days I’m practicing my Master Sports Nutritionist skills, some days I’m working on a new workout program. Some days I travel and I’m a reporter. Other days I’m a creator, business consultant, a chef, a brand advisor, student, speaker, influencer or network marketer sometimes!
Some days I’m happy just being “Mommy”, “wife”, friend” or even “dog owner”.
I have a lot of interests, a lot of talents, and a lot I still want to explore, learn and do. Soooo it depends on the day.
What do YOU do?
